St. Valentine in Dublin

As Valentines Day approaches I thought I'd try and find out a bit more about the man. So we'll start at the end of his life .... Did you know that St. Valentine is reportedly buried in Dublin! The Carmalite Church in Whitefriar St. in Dublin City Centre claims to hold the remains of the saint. How the remains got to be there is quite interesting. One of the Carmelites attached to the church went to Rome in 1835 and he impressed the pope so much with his preaching skills - obviously the Irish Gift of the Gab - that the then pope decided to gift his church with the body of St. Valentine! The remains were duly transfered to Whitefriar St. Church from Rome in 1836 and have been there ever since. Nice gift!

Really dont get the whole hype surrounding Valentines Day...surely its yet another commercially concocted rip-off day...designed to get loved up couples to fork out for the whole cliched flowers and chocolates extravaganza...seems to put undue pressure on couples to make a romantic gesture, surely if you're in love, then EVERY day is Valentines day rather than waiting for a date on a calendar to tell you what to do...or has being single turned me into a miserly cynic....does anyone actually ENJOY Valentines day?

I agree totally with you Ami_kitten. It's just another commercial venture to get foolish people to part with vast amounts of money.

Or is it?

Problem is, all cynicism aside, what if you're in a relationship and you're the only female from all your friends who doesn't receive special attention on this day...the card, the flowers, the chocs...whatever

Do you feel short-changed, unloved, in a relationship with a 'meanie'

Seriously, how does it make you feel as a woman?

I for one, although agree it is such a commercial rip-off, would feel horrible if my partner did not make some kind of fuss about me on this day

Sorry to all the feminists out there! Guess I'm just looking for love :-)

Okay, but its a day when all the *smug marrieds* or at least loved up lovelies, are struggling down grafton street on their way home from the office under the weight of their flowers....while the rest of us all consisiting of: a) the in relationship going nowhere b) with selfish git or b) the unsmug singles...look on bemuseldy or miserably...either way....who's actually happy about it all??!!!
