How to write an online dating profile
Your online profile is a combination of answers you give to the questions posed by a dating website, plus a free-form passage that lets you describe who you are and what sort of person you're searching for. This personal essay is your best shot at giving potential dates a vivid sense of your personality. Use these tips to write a standout profile:
- Use spell-check. If your profile contains typos or misspellings, many people will dismiss you out of hand. If you can't be bothered to get the details right, they'll figure, you must not be invested in the process.
- Show your heart. People are looking for authenticity (as are you!). If you reveal nothing about what truly matters in your life, you risk attracting only those individuals who are looking for a superficial relationship.
- Don't undersell yourself. Let your writing style speak for you. If you're funny, be funny. If you're earnest, let it show. Give yourself a couple of paragraphs to let your personality emerge, but resist going on much longer than that; people page through pictures and profiles quickly, and you don't want to create the impression it'll be a slog to read your thoughts.
